Chapter 17

~

Emily woke up with Chester curled next to her on the pillow. “Come on, baby. Let’s get some breakfast.”

Henry came out of the shower. “I hope you weren’t going to try to go down the steps without a spotter?”

“No, never.” Chester flew off the bed and down the steps.

“You must have had another whopper of a nightmare last night,” said Henry. “Do you remember waking up?”

“Yes. I kept seeing Blake’s arm hanging out of the dumpster again. I can’t help thinking if we’d gotten there a few minutes sooner, we could have saved him.”

“I doubt it,” said Henry. “I hope the police get to the bottom of the attack before anyone else gets hurt or…”

“Or turns up dead?” said Emily. She shuddered. “I worry about Maddy and Amy being out of our sight.”

“Who’d have a reason to go after either of them? I can’t imagine anyone having a problem with Amy, and Maddy’s biological father is no longer a threat.”

“Who had reason to kill a social worker? Or an old man who ran a spider web museum?”

“The spider web guy’s death hasn’t technically been classified as murder. There’s nothing linking him to Hope or Blake.”

“Or Larsen?” asked Emily. “I wonder if Megan and Ron explored that avenue.”

“Of course, they did. Come on. I’m hungry.” He grabbed the crutches and supported Emily down the steps.

Emily’s phone vibrated in her robe pocket. “Who’d be calling at this hour?” She saw the contact photo pop up. “It’s my mother. Hope everything is okay. Why would she be calling so early?”

“Only one way to find out,” said Henry. “I’ll get the coffee started.”

“Mom?”

“Emily, I hate to call so early, but I’m very upset. I spoke to your sister earlier. She says she’s moving to Sugarbury Falls to live with this boyfriend of hers.”

“I know. I’m not in favor of it either. Coralee offered Amy a full-time job. She wants to send her to cooking school. She thinks Amy has talent.”

“How can Amy handle herself at a cooking school? She’d have to get back and forth and you know she doesn’t deal well with being rushed. You know what cooking schools are like. You’ve seen those TV shows.”

“She’s not going to compete to be a chef at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. She just wants to learn more about cooking.”

“And if she feels at all pressured or confused, she’ll throw a tantrum. And it’s dangerous, having a tantrum around hot stoves and sharp knives,” said Frances.

“I know.”

“And what’s this about a boyfriend? All of a sudden, all she talks about is Perry.”

“We’ve met Perry and his parents. They are nice people. Perry is very polite, and he has a job.”

“At a garage,” said Frances.

“It’s a job. And he managed to get a driver’s license. I’m not saying I’m in favor of Amy shacking up with him, but you know how stubborn she is. And, she’s not a child.”

“She has the attention span of a child. How’s she going to focus in cooking school?”

“When she’s doing something she likes, she focuses just fine,” said Emily.
